high speed long trip

I really don't know what I am doing here. But I have a question. I am planning to ride to NM in September. I am used to riding at speeds of 70-80 MPH. I am wondering how well my 2003 will hold up at say 75MPH for 450 miles each day. I just bought this wing with a little over 9K on the meter. Any help here? thanks bud

I've ridden over 900 miles in one day on a fully overloaded Silverwing, averaging just under tachometer redline most of the way.
The only hiccups I got were what seems to be some sort of governor around the redline....Or it could have been my power commander was set too rich in that band...I dunno. Anyway, when I hit it, the bike hiccuped. A good reminder to stay under redline.

But as far as pushing the bike too far??? Not a chance in hell.

However, you should pack a cheap tire repair kit and compressor.

Not that I would condone this behavior but....
Even though you can't outrun a radio, you can outrun stock police Harley Davidson Motorcycles on the Silverwing.

In my experience, this should present no problem. The Swing is more than capable of this kind of riding. In fact, one could say it is designed for it.

My longest day's ride to date was close to 600 miles, no problems on my 04, now with over 21K miles on it.

I live in NM, and have ridden to Grand Canyon, Tucson, Monument Valley, Arches NP (Moab), etc.

I'd just be sure that all maintenance is up to date, might change the oil and filter, good tires, belt might want changing even though it's not strictly due for another 7K miles, but it's now about 8 years old in there - could be a bit dried out?

With all this, I'd guess that you'd be good to go.

If all the standard things are done like, fresh oil & filter, air in good tires, new plugs if needed, new final drive oil, check or replace air filter, and check coolant level. You should have a great time.

When was the last time you looked at the belt?

Yah, definitely watch out for that belt!!!

I've done 750 miles in one day on a ridiculously overloaded Swing with large shield and giant saddlebags with no problems going 70-80mph actual (i.e. by GPS, not speedo) -- even at 80mph you can still blast right by those big semis without any effort. You'll be grinning like an idiot, but I'd love to hear what you get for mileage, as mine was atrocious, coming in between 31 and 35.

Oh, and yeah, you're at 9k miles -- do you know if the previous owner changed what needed to be changed at 8k? Also, by the time you're done with your trip, how much will you have ridden? Make sure that those things that need to be changed or replaced or cleaned are done, so you have more peace of mind. I was at 9k miles when I left on a 3000 mile trip, and had changed my tires and oil and air filter... but didn't even think about my belt, which shredded to bits 700 miles from home and left me stranded for 4 days.

Kind of related, but kind of not. My 2003 has 6500 miles on it and I have an acceleration growl/vibration. Could my belt be worn, or aged? Haven't looked yet, but on the list.

I recommend checking the battery as well. Last thing you need is a dead battery. Some auto store can run tests to check if the battery is healthy.

On an older scoot like yours, I would definitely, change the drive belt to a new one. It may look like new but the wear is not visible by just looking.
it's not just the miles but age also. Change it for peace of mind . Especially since you are planning on some high speed runs. There will be a lot of heat during these runs.
