Itdidn' haveone on it when I bought it.I changed the oil 3200 miles ago'but didn,t know It needed one I bought one to put in, but can't get the oil plug outTo instal it. It lookes like it was bottomed put butdidn't hit the plug. The metal around it is bent a little.A friend had a socket that would hold, but put quite a bit of torque on it and couldn't budge it.Will it damage the engin to ru without the screenand spring? Any suggestions as to how to get the oil plug out Denny,

In my opinion that screen is an archaic holdover from the early days, as is the valve cover they used for an oil plug. The screen is identical to the one in the Honda Helix, but of course the Helix doesn't have any other filter. The screen might catch large metal particles I suppose but if the engine is throwing that kind of metal around its not long for this world anyway. Can't help you on the plug, but curious how it got so tight if you changed it previously?

I stripped my plug once because I must of overtighted it on a previous oil change. I never tighten it with full force, since I have Superman strength, but the next time I went out to change the oil the tappit would not budge. And since I stripped it I had to take it to the shop to remove and replace with a new one.

As for the screen, it probably wouldn't hurt since you have some miles on it. If it were a brand new SWing I would make sure to install it, since the first few hundred miles may get some metal "flakes" from it being brand new. But I think these SWings are built so well that it is hard to hurt them. I hardly ever hear of a SWing that blows and engine our something. This is just my opinion though, but I think these things are almost impossilbe to hurt.
