Recently I had a set of tires changed at cycle gear. They said with the rubber mounted goldwing right angle valve stems it was their policy to replace them at every tire change. They were 6$ which seems steep. So this leaves me with two question. Do you agree that the right angle stems need to be changed and where can I buy these online for less than $6?

Or you could try these and save some money - will probably put them on the Silverwing:

I have the Ariete valve stems. I do not believe I will need to replace them.

The right-angled valve on the rear of my bike split; I'd had a new tyre and very soon after it started losing air at an alarming rate.
I was in the UK and managed to find a man at lunchtime on the Saturday who said he'd have a look and discovered the split where valve meets rim.
I now have a stubby, ordinary valve in but he gave me a screw-on right-angled adaptor in case I need it.

Great chap - hadn't ever taken the rear wheel off a maxi before but set to with efficiency....and only charged me £20 !
In the meantime, his wife provided tea and coffee for me and the rest of the group I was with.

That's at Mavis Enderby, only 20 miles from where I live!

There is a story, true or otherwise, of a direction sign near there, to the village of Mavis Enderby, and the neighbouring village of Old Bolingbroke.

The sign read 'To Old Bolingbroke and Mavis Enderby', to which someone had added 'The gift of a son'!

The one thing that really annoyed me was trying to check my tyre pressure on the rear tyre with that right angled valve. I do my pressures weekly, and it was really getting to me , so, when i changed tyres i had an ordinary valve fitted and each time i change tyres i have new valves. I still have to lie on the floor to check the tyres but, for me,it is easier with the straight valve. Smile

+1 BigTime! Cycle Gear is right - replace them every time OR do the Kurvey Girl thing! I love my right-angled METAL valve stems - but you will need to grind a bit away on the rear so that they fit. You will likely NEVER need to replace the metal valve stems.

First if safety is of any value to you, replace valve stem with standard short rubber ones. Right angle llike Gold Wing are designed to be tied down---don't work that way on silver wing--think of little wheel going around at 80 mph.

Good tire procedure is change valve stem every tire change.

The lay down procedure to inflate or check tire good exercise.

Honda put some thought into what works for SilverWing and tackle box techs usually cannot do better. High speed deflations are not fun.

The Ariete stem fits fine but we had to remove the little tab on the rim that holds the bracket for the OE rubber stem. Checking the pressures is still a PITA (I also lie on the floor to make this easier) but at least the metal stem doesn't move when you press against it.

I use a Slime air compressor that screws onto the valve (instead of that silly clamp thing almost all other air compressors use), and the air compressor also stops at the pressure I want. Even so, it's definitely a PITA to check pressure on the rear.
