PostSubject: Re: Easy Alternate 4-Way Flashers   Easy Alternate 4-Way Flashers I_icon_minitimeWed Dec 14, 2011 5:54 am

Digressing slightly but regarding Hazard Flashers: I wondered about getting some sort of amber flashing light that I could get out and stick on my topbox in an emergency rather than trying to alter the wiring on the bike.
Any thoughts or suggestions, anyone?

Thanks, Dale.
I had in mind more of the beacons that go on utility vehicles but you've given me an idea;
does anyone in Europe know whether there is a specified 'speed' for 4-way flashers?
I know there are for turn signals, i.e. number of flashes per minute.

The though crosses my mind that I could 'orangeify' a bicycle front LED light, the ones with different modes. They can be seen for a fair distance and take up almost no room.

You would think that Honda would build 4 way flashers into the Swing.

Agreed, but can you say "price point" or "space claim?"

It wouldn't increase the cost that much, the parts cost about 5 bucks for us and would cost Honda 1/5 of that. Aside from a switch 2 diodes and a little wire all of the other components are already in the bike. Space claim, My Burgman has them and the switch takes up no space.

Dale can you get me one of those please??? I don't seem to be able to find it available here in the UK (maybe not looking hard enough) but it looks like a great item to carry on the bike esp as 'Europe' has now made it compulsory to carry one! They haven't specified any dimension etc. yet - so I reckon it fits the bill! In fact at that price I'd rather like to have two please!

I'm happy to do a Paypal Transfer if thats okay with you?

The easiest way to carry a Warning Triangle is a white nylon helmet bag that has a hi-viz reflective 3-M Scotchlite Warning Triangle sewn onto it. The big German bike gear stores have been selling them for a few years now. Another variation is a waterproof roll-top luggage bag with the Warning Triangle printed on one side.

I've just found these:

I could mount them on my topbox.

Just wondering... would the installed turn signal flasher system currently installed on the SWing, have enough 'oomph' to operate all four turn signals if they were wired or "switched" together???

Also "MikeO", wouldn't those bright strobes be illegal for a civilian vehicle? I've seen them on police bikes here but doubt that they'd be permissible on even a "parade" bike or one of our Patriot Guard / Legion Riders escorts.

I'd only want to use them if I break down or have to pull off to the side of the road for some other emergency, Dick, which is why I wouldn't bother with having any at the front.
I take your point, though.

I've owned bikes fitted with 4-way hazard flashers and my 650 Burgman had them. Motoring accessories stores sell Multi Function Lamps that combine a torch with separate red and amber flashing lights, and don't take up much space. In a situation where 4- way flashers are needed, switch on the SW's left or right indicators, and position the lamp with it's amber light flashing on the opposite side of the SW.

Good idea "Meldrew"; I was just wondering (technically) if the other would be possible (without a lot of other hassle). Would like to do it if feasible.

As some of you older members remember, I installed a set amber flashers to my '08 for PGR missions. They worked great and the police had no problems with it and they sure came in handi later.

I'd forgotten all about them, Dennis - thanks for the link.

My only anxiety about combining one flasher with a flashing torch is that they may not flash as a in sync and I don't think that would be legal in Europe.

As the Silver Wing isn't fitted with 4-way flashers, another amber light from a flashing torch or lamp placed beside your scoot is there as a hazard warning light. You also have the option of using a red flashing light on these lamps, whether they flash in sync isn't important as much as they increase your visibility, alert your presence to other traffic, and could prevent another vehicle hitting you.

PostSubject: Re: Easy Alternate 4-Way Flashers   Easy Alternate 4-Way Flashers I_icon_minitimeMon Jan 09, 2012 6:29 am

To answer DickO's query - The alarm fitted on my Silverwing has an added facility to operate all four flashers if required. So it would appear to be feasible.

I have an Osram Star Halogen torch which if you pull up the lens section it reveals an amber section (360 degrees visability) and the lamp flashes. Another feature is that the base has a magnet. (Great on a car but needs a bit of thinking about on the scoot).

You could use on of these, three modes, leds flash individually, all three flash simultaneously, on constantly. A red hood can be flipped over the lens glass. Not amber but very noticeable.
