PostSubject: Oil Filters   Oil Filters I_icon_minitimeSun Jul 11, 2010 3:14 pm

Hi All,
There are numerous posts discussing and/or arguing the various merits of oil filter brands on the boards. What I can't seem to find though, is a good listing of what Oil Filter #s fit the Silverwing. I've also not found a good summary of brand part numbers anywhere else on the Intertubes. Here's an attempted start, maybe we can put our heads together and get a somewhat complete list. I'm trying to include some links to where you can get it, but obviously other sources will be available...

Brand:_________ Part #___________ Where to buy:____________________________________________
Honda ---------- 15410-MFJ-D01 -Honda Dealers, Online OEM vendors USA: http://www.ronayers.com
Fram Motorcycle- PH6017A -Lots of retailers, Wally World, etc. (FWIW, this filter gets an awful review on http://www.tobycreek.org/oil_filters/fram.shtml)
K&N Motorcycle - KN-204 / KN-204C -Online dealers, http://www.bikebandit.com www.amazon.com find a local dealer: http://www.knfilters.com/search/dealersearch.aspx
HiFLo ----------- HF204/HF951 - Online dealers, http://www.bikebandit.com, scootertrap, etc.
Amsoil ---------- EaOM103/103c - Online dealers, local affiliates. http://www.amsoil.com
Purolator ------- ML161817 - Local parts stores and big-box stores. Probably some online places too.
Athena --------- FFP00?? - http://scootertrap.com
Vesrah --------- SF-4007?

Anyway, there's a start!

Hi Jeff,

The Super Tech oil filter sold by WalMart is made by Champion not Fram. It's a great filter and I use them on my Silverwing.

One nice feature about the K&N oil filter is that is has a welded on bolt at the top of the filter which makes it easy to break it loose with a socket/ratchet when it comes time to change the oil.

Big price difference between K & N and Wix, Purolator PureOne, NAPA Gold. As in about $9 difference each.

I ride about 3000 miles a year, so I look at the ease of changing well worth the $9 a year. No expense for ill fitting really big sockets, no scuffed knuckles during changes. Oil Filters Icon_cheers Oil Filters Icon_cheers Oil Filters Icon_cheers

I find the recommendations somewhat suspect when they call the OEM filter unsatisfactory. Oil Filters Affraid

Hey Guys,

This guy went out and spent a bunch of money on all the different motorcycle oil filters and cut them apart.

Sounds like the Purolator One wins the day. In the long run, it's probably more important that you change your oil and filter on a regular basis rather than getting caught up in the type of oil and filter. I'm one of those who shells out for the AMSOIL Fluids both in the engine and in the rear. Does it make a difference.... Maybe..... but probably only slightly at best. Maybe my engine lasts 10,000 more miles than the guy that uses Supertech. But at the end of the day, both of us will probably have moved on to a different bike before it would ever be an issue for comparison. If someone uses the $2 supertech filter compared to a $6 they'll save $120.00 having only spent 60 bucks for filters for every 100,000 miles driven. The other guy will have spent 180 bucks but will have confidence/comfort/peace of mind that his filter is doing a superior job. Either way..... They both Win in their own mind!

Hey Dennis,

They seem to have a good reputation for quality lubricants and the test results that I've seen done by the API are excellent. They are not neccesarily the best in every category but usually close to it so that is why I purchase them. I acutually by a six month membership and put together an order large enough to last me for a couple of years. I am getting low on Amsoil so I will have to do it again soon. Did you have a good experience working with Amsoil Products?

Ron, Good luck with the Amsoil thing. I trust SuperTech products (Champion)...O' buy the way Champion also makes oil fliters for the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle. Not the after market filter, but the one Harley puts their name on. When you buy a $25,000.00 Harley it has a Champion filter installed.

Good luck.

Dennis,

What was your experience with Amsoil? I'm perceving that you didn't have a positive one. If so, what specifically turned you away from their products?
