Where can I find detailed instructions for installing a Goldwing DC socket? My dealer is saying they would have to spend hours doing this at $80 per.

If you supply the socket, and show them where it fits in the left glove compartment, there should be no reason their mechanic could not do that in less than an hour. Maybe they could do an oil change or something else at the same time to give them more incentive to do your project. billc.

My brother bought a marine-grade socket and installed it in that bracket inside the glove box. It took hime less than an hour, though he is a seasoned mechanic. I know my local dealer told a Goldwing owner they charged an hour of labor for the installation.

My brother had my shop mmanual for wiring information, said it was just like putting one on his ST1300. So you could check their forum, possibly.

I have this, but not mounted to my handle bar. I connected it directly to the battery but added an inline fuse. I left a few feet of cable for various applications. Works well.

12 volt socket - Installing DC socket Empty
PostSubject: Re: Installing DC socket   12 volt socket - Installing DC socket I_icon_minitimeWed Apr 03, 2013 7:00 pm

I just installed one 2-weekends ago, I put mine below and to the left of the righthand side pocket. It was fairly easy to take out the tray and then feed the wires down the left side of the motor covering. There is a small channel there that you can feed the wires thru. Once I got it past the fuel door I removed the sparkplug access door and using a coat hangar I pulled the wires back to the battery area. I did remove the left rear plastic but that wasn't hard to do. I used cable ties to tie the wiring to the frame so it can't move around. I connected and inline 15 Amp fuse to the hot lead and that lead went to the positive terminal of the battery and the negative wire has a connector that went to the negative side of the battery. It's totally hidden, and looks factory. It did take me longer than and hour but I did have to go to Harbor Freight to pick up a stepped hole saw to cut the 1" hole for the cigarette lighter adapter. It stays hot all the time so I also used it to keep the trickle charger charging the battery.

Wherever you end up fitting the socket it is a good idea to make sure it is always live as ScootRGuy has done. Ideal for connecting a battery tender / charger to or for powering low wattage items. I run a small LED light from it using a lead from the left hand glove compartment's socket (Europe spec scoot so factory installed) with lead trailing into the tent.

Unless you need to power a GPS or radio whilst on the move then the simplest installation is directly onto the battery but fit an inline fuse of 10 amps or so.

Cheers,
