PostSubject: front bearings?   front bearings? I_icon_minitimeTue Jun 05, 2012 10:50 pm

I think my front bearings are going, I hear a scraping\light grinding coming from the front. Nothing stuck under the wheel well, already removed and checked. Read the topic on removing the front wheel, which is something I can do. What I want to know is can I replace the bearings myself, is it easy? And are there any tutorials and\or tips anyone can share? And, if not done immediately, about how much more ride can I get out of them, and what are the consequences if I am out on the road and they go entirely? Only been 30 miles since I noticed the noise. If not the bearings then what?
Thank you

Did your dealer use OEM pads? My dealer put non OEM pads on (EBC I think) I took it back as they were dragging and was told they would seat in. Long story short they ruined my disk. I went to the parts department and was told use only Honda OEM parts so I got anew disk and OEM pads and put them on myself and all was fine. I well never have anyone else but me do them again and with OEM parts.
My 2 cents

Lordbal, how many miles has the bike done? Not advisable to run on worn bearings(if confirmed) at all.

Try to apply some braking to the front using your right lever only.If the noise changes then your pads need some time to"seat"

got almost 60,000 miles on it. tried the braking, no change. dont really know if they used oem or not. I would imagine because of the mileage, it is the bearings. no worries, I just ordered new ones today. should get them next week. So they are easy to install myself?

The real expert is Bigbird, but i have changed wheel bearings a few times, take your time think twice before acting. With the wheel off(and on a bench)heat up the bearings or the metal holding them in: not red hot, just very warm, the idea is to expand the metal. With a drift or punch of some kind tap around the lower bearing through the upper one moving all around until it comes out. Then repeat from the inside on the other one. With the casing heated as before(after cleaning)use the old bearing to gently tap the new bearings into place.Try not to put any pressure on the inner bearing at any time. This is how i have fitted mine. If someone more knowledgeable than me disagrees or advises a different way of doing them then take thier advice. Smile

When fitting bearings I tend to place the new bearings in the freezer for an hour or so before installing.
