Taking off the bodywork, ran into Threadlocker Empty
PostSubject: Taking off the bodywork, ran into Threadlocker   Taking off the bodywork, ran into Threadlocker I_icon_minitimeTue Apr 18, 2017 8:17 pm

Back Story:  Just picked up a 2005 with 5000 miles that has been stored since 2009.  Opened the fuel tank and found heavy rust, too much to just clean up and seal the tank.  Paid $92 shipped for a clean tank off of ebay.  It arrived yesterday so I started in today.

I'm about an hour into removing the body work so I can start doing all the required maintenance and remove and replace the fuel tank and things were going pretty well.  Some of the bolts broke loose with a snap sound, others slowly released like there is Green threadlocker on them.  The first threadlocker bolt I came across ended up rounding off and still refused to break free (spent three hours and two trips to Lowes getting it loose!!!).  The rest I applied heat to and they came loose slowly but without issue.

I've got the skirts, front cover, and instrument panel off.  I think I would have had the tank out if not for the threadlocker.

Anyway, just a heads up for others and wondering if what I found was typical.

Thanks
Keith
PS: 30 years of riding and doing my own maintenance did not prepare me removing body panels... Yikes!

I think Honda do use thread locker when assembling. I only use medium strength locker on wheel nuts and variator but also brake bolts, as they recommend.

After getting everything back together, I no longer think it's thread locker. What I think is that the bolts had torsion on them from slightly off-center holes. The bolts that hold everything together have so many angles of force on them that some of that tension torques on the bolt essentially locking it.

Kbetts I found that on a couple of Gold Wings I worked on, some were removed while dirty or rusty I try to clean them and put them back into the same place they came from, a bit of a pain but it helps reassembly.
