Found a used wing at a local dealer. 2007 model with 15,000 miles on it. Body is in perfect condition, no dings, etc., new tires, oil and filter changed, valves checked, new belt put on. He has it priced at $2695. What say yea on this possibility?

Sounds like a good ball park figure to me. But consider that there isn't much of a market for maxi scoots so you should haggle a better out-the-door price. It's not as if there's a line of guys wanting to buy it. My 2¢ anyway.

Tim

[Edit] Hmm, maybe $2700 for an '07 is too high. Wouldn't be a bad price for an '08 though.

Judging from what I paid for my '04 last year with about the same mileage, he's right in the ballpark.

This was posted in another area this week. Someone bought a a new (holdover) 2013 for $4,999 plus fees. The 2007 should still have a lot of life in it, but based on this, $2,700 for a 2007 with 12,000 miles might be a little high.

"Bought mine a 2013 a little over a year ago, brand new 1 mile.
Same dealer still has 1 or 2 for sale, $4999 plus a few fees.$300 prep-shipping.
Yes they are still out there. I suspect some still in Honda warehouse?
Track and Trail State collage PA. Nice small dealer, many discounts there."

Hate to say it, but with the maxi market the way it is, even at $5500 OTD for a NOS 2013, the buyer is still probably going to take a substantial depreciation hit just riding it off the lot.

On the 2007, never pay asking price for a used bike until you negotiate enough to find out the real price they'll sell it for.

Just a thought here, but maybe if you talk to your friendly bank loan person they could tell you what the loan value for a used Silverwing of a given model year might be. I know that dealer sales managers and banks have different KBB and NADA books than are available to you and me. Can't hurt to ask.

Research already done. Will start with a $2300 offer and see what comes of it and go from there.

Well they said no to the $2300 as I thought they would but did come back with a $2575 offer. Today I will counter with $2450 and see what they have to say.

In my part of the country one as described would run somewhere $2500-2600 in a private sale. I've purchased three of them here in Oregon, two for me and one for a friend. One thing that can make a difference is whether the one you're looking at has had a belt change. If I remember right the manual replacement interval is at 16,000mi. Since that one is coming up on it you might suggest the dealer he either knock off the price of a belt change from the asking price or split it with you. In the real world I've changed the CVTs on the two SWs I had, one had 28,000 miles and the belt still measured almost exactly the same as the new one. The owner had purchased the bike new and said he'd never changed it. So Honda's recommendation is quite conservative. Changing the belt is a simple matter and doesn't take much in the line of tools. You should have a torque wrench but a 1/2" drive one from Harbor Freight is inexpensive and work well. Lots of info here on belt changing but it's not really imminent on the bike in discussion.

The dealer changed the oil and filter, serviced the air filter, checked the valves and changed the belt on trade in before putting it on the floor for sale. It is ready to roll for the next owner. With a little luck, that might be me.

KBB has the retail listed at $3375 for the 2007 model. Their "sale" price is $2695, $680 below retail and has been there about a month, I was told by the parts guy. They came down to $2575 and I sent a counter back for $2450. Waiting to here back from them.

I paid $1,900 for a '04 with 15k last year from a private party. They had it listed for 2k. So for three years newer, I think either at $2450 or $2575 you're getting a fair deal.

Howard, they probably checked valves on both tires. Not a fib, just your perception.  Wink

perception! I doubt if any dealer would spend half a day on something that they would never get back. Nine out of ten dealers do not stock the shims to do the job.

Sounds good but ask to see the paperwork to support their "supposed" services. Trust me they will tell you anything to sell a vehicle. A few years back I bought a used car and based on mileage I knew it was close to needing a timing belt... Of course they swore it had been done, but in 3 months guess what? Yeap the belt broke. If they really did all this then the paperwork should be available... Good luck.

I will look at the paperwork for sure, thanks. How long does it take to remove/replace an OEM belt?

In the shop, on a lift, with power tools: 20 - 30 minutes.

In your garage, on the floor, with hand tools: 45 minutes

Without prior experience; in your garage, on the floor, with hand tools: 1.5 - 2 hours.

IIRC our fearless leader, JeffR, posted an excellent tutorial here on the forum. If not then there are several posted on YouTube

Thank you very much. Exactly what I needed. What size torqs wrenches, etc. will I need for the job?

[Mod Edit] You really should get a Factory Service Manual (FSM). Obviously it will contain the answers to most questions as well as all the torque values. Meanwhile the critical torque is the 17mm variator bolt at 76 ft lbs. While the belt case & cover bolts; several small 8mm bolts, the three 12mm bolts and 5mm button-head hex bolts, are "common sense" torqued.

Helminc.com sells licensed reprints of Honda service manuals. Not cheap at $65 but the best money you can spend on one's scooter. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to do maintenance on their bike.

Thanks to all for the information. According to paperwork in the shop it only shows that the air filter, oil change and new oil filter were done. The belt is the original 2007 belt. If they don't either come down on their price and I pay them to do the belt change or the price stays as is but includes a new belt, I may just let them keep the wing and I'll just keep riding my V-Star 950 until I find a better deal on a wing elsewhere.

I don't think I'd want to do business with a dealership that lied about the CVT belt being changed regardless of price. If you paid them to do it how would you know if they actually did?

And fibbed about the valve adjustment, also. What they did do apparently was have a mostly made-up list of common maintenance that a potential buyer might ask about.

Bad vibes would lead me to keep looking. These bikes aren't that rare, nor are they much in demand it seems.

Anybody with a 2007 or newer want to trade for a 2009 Yamaha V-Star 950 with a tall star touring windshield, braided steel brake lines, floor boards, large Yamaha leather covered hard bags and a wide vintage Mustang touring saddle with a large passenger seat? Also has Kuryakyn iso grips, K&N air filter and a set of Shinko SE890 Journey radials that have between 1500-2000 miles on them? Wired for a battery tender and for heated gloves with a rheostat. Will even give you the gloves. Averages 50-55 mpg. This is my daily commuter and just turned 30K miles.

Well, a couple came in last week and paid the full asking price for the little wing and were willing to pay extra for a new belt. So, unless something else shows up soon I will continue to ride my Yamaha 950 V-Star tour for the season. Still on the lookout though.
