PostSubject: WHINING REAR DRIVE   WHINING REAR DRIVE I_icon_minitimeTue Jul 14, 2015 10:23 am

I bought my 2014 Silverwing 600.from a dealer, about three months ago. the bike
is still under warranty untill Oct 2015. I have begun to notice a high pitched
whine coming I beleive from the rear drive, and get more noticable when
thottling up and down in slow moving traffic at about 40 mph. I would value
anybody`s comments please. Thank You. Bikemad.

You may have a bad beaing in the final drive. Lucky you, you are still covered by a warranty. Take it back to the dealer for repair. While a defective final drive is extremely unusual, at least your complaint will be on-record if the dealer tries to brush your complaint off and the problem remains unresolved.

Ahem...You did check the final drive oil, haven't you?

Interesting question. Being in the automotive service business and
going for many road tests, listing to the question, can you hear that I took it upon my self to completely dissemble the final drive (56K) this spring on my 06 silverwing. I was never quite satisfied with the noise from the final drive. Going right to the answer, I found no reason for concern. The final drive is quite simple by design.
A input shaft, a counter shaft(to change direction)and a output shaft to deliver power to the rear wheel. None of the bearings require to be preloading so as not be a concern. I would suggest on your next ride you slightly apply the left brake and see if the noise changes or disappears.Disk brake pads can cause some mysterious noise. Next I would change the final drive lube, although I do not think this will do anything but give piece of mind. The next step would be to service the belt area including lubrication of the small inner clutch bearing. After that the next step is to ride it.
If any one else has a question I will try to do my best. Howard

p.s. If there is a achilles heal it is the left support bearing mounted in the left outer cover. This is the reason for the insulation in the cover.

The small inner clutch bearing was dry from the factory on my 09 .Remove the clutch pad assembly and look deep inside you will find the dry bearing.

Although the small bearing has been a source of concern it is only noticeable on start up and turns with the clutch assembly. When the clutch assembly is completely locked up, about 3-5 mph it is not the source of any noise. But it should be lubed. Howard

Actually, for a while I did get a good bit of whining from the rear. But then it all went away when I stopped bringing her along...   (cue rim-shot)

I have wondered if a manual gearbox and diff treatment additive would help with the final drive whine.

MAYBE, but it could cover up a more serious problem, the trip to the dealership is the first step. GETTING THEIR written answer is another important step, a verbal answer gets you NOWHERE when the problem persists. BTDT

The original post was made in 2015 and the poster, Bikemad, hasn't visited this forum since July of 2015. One can reasonably assume that the "Whining" issue has been resolved one way or another.

Look at bikemad's posts more closely, he made his Intro post, asked about his scooters rear wheel drive problem, got a few answers then made his third and final post, then disappeared all within a day or so of joining.

Picking the forums brain for info was probably all he joined for.
