Hi,

I finally had a chance to try my new scooters: 2007 Burgman 400 with under 800 miles *and a 2008 Honda Silver Wing 600 with 9200 miles.
So here are my first impressions: The Burgman vibrates like crazy in low gears. The Silver Wing does too but to a much lesser degree. In fact I got turned off by the Burgman's vibrations so much that I am thinking of getting rid of it altogether. My old 1995 Honda Helix 250 is way smoother than a newer, and suposedly better, Suzuki Burgman 400.
What do you think is causing these vibrations on the Burgman? Could it be that it's because it is still in the break in period? Could it also be because the transmission belt on the Burgman has ridges in it?
I honestly cannot explain why a brand spanking new scooter would vibrate this much. I would have never bought such a scooter at close to $8000. I paid $3100 for it and I am not satisfied at all.
Any input is highly appreciated.

It's the nature of the beast with a single cylinder. My 2003 did the same and my friends 2008 does too. I really noticed it the most at idling. You do get used to it and it didn't really bother me after awhile. There's most likely nothing wrong with your scooter. On the other hand if you want to do a quick sale, I'll give you a grand for it.

I'm on several m/c forums and some, bike specific. However so many folks own other bikes too or have changed brands but still hang around. Hard to not bring other bikes into the discussion. I think some also have chat rooms to discuss other bikes. Perhaps a new category would be helpful like; Other Maxiscooters.

Your 2007 Burgman 400 is the first year of its redesign and it was engineered with a clutch problem.  It shuddered and made a high pitch noise which is why Suzuki had to re-engineer the clutch the same year.  If you get the shuddering with both the B400 and SWing you can hold the front brake in tightly and rev up the engine to about 4,000 rpm's for about 4 seconds. This helps clean off the 'glazing' on the clutch.  Try that but with the 400 first but you may have one with clutch problems.  Many people with the 2007 replaced their OEM clutch with an aftermarket clutch.

I didn't feel any vibrations at idle. It vibrates a lot at low speeds and it annoys the heck out of me.
I am seriously considering getting rid of it altogether. The Silver Wing does vibrate a little too at low speeds, but it's much less noticeable than the Burgman.
I also have a 1995 Honda Helix 250 and it is much better than this newer and bigger Burgman.

Does it vibrate less if you give more throttle when you start off? I think if you deglaze the clutch pads and maybe put a couple grams lighter Dr Pulley sliders in it.
Often people don't give enough throttle when taking off from a stop will glaze the clutch pads quickly. But if you get used to giving throttle when starting off it should be smooth longer and not need deglazing as often.

I have not experimented with this deglazing business. All I did was ride it for about 20 miles and got so annoyed at the vibrations that I put it back in the garage and forgot about it.
Now I will try this deglazing business and see what comes out of it. If I understood properly what I need to do is apply the front brakes and for a few seconds twist the throttle and see what happens while the bike is on the center stand. Did I get it right?

If you're going to try to deglaze the clutch pads the way Jeff suggested Hold the rear brake too but on the ground. What you are trying to do is slip the clutch more or less to remove some of the glaze on the pads.
Do you give a good bit of throttle when you start off? If not try giving more throttle when starting off and see if it's smoother.

Does it vibrate whilst riding along or only when pulling away?
If it does it whilst riding along then it's not the clutch.
With less than 800 miles the engine will still be tight. Get a couple of thousand miles on it then see what it's like.

You're spot on mate I am, but I'm not on here complaining about a 2007 Burgman that's covered 800 miles in the last 8 years and looking for a shoulder to cry on. When I had a 2005 400 Burgman, the running or breaking in period was the most tedious 500 miles I've ever ridden as 4000 rpm was about 40mph. Even after the 500 mile Service I was speed and rev restricted up to 1000 miles. I covered that mileage in weeks, your K7 hasn't covered that in 8 years.

I didn't have vibration problems and I toured in Germany on it a few times so I'm two steps ahead of you. Take the advice, deglaze the clutch and go and ride a few hundred miles on it. Myself I've deglazed more pans than clutches.

Thinking back to my pre-grumpy days on my 1996 Helix, it vibrated quite a bit too. I can't remember the exact speed it use to do it, but there was a rough patch and all you did was open the throttle to go faster and it was gone. I rode that Helix until it was 8 years old like your Burgman and back then there was no forums to ask for advice on.

having purchased at least 9 new rubber band drive scooters and now near 400,000 miles on them----try the degaize process-----8 year old bike, needs new drive belt and a fresh set of tires for your own safety.
