PostSubject: Oil grades for use in FJS 600 Silverwing   engine oil I_icon_minitimeSun Mar 22, 2015 11:18 am

Hi there

The specified oil grade of 10w - 40 is to my knowledge the correct multigrade oil to use with this particular Honda engine, as it covers such a wide range of operating conditions.

It would be ideally suited to all year round UK use, based on the maritime climate in the UK.

It is the grade I have used for the past 4 years in my Silverwing - semi synthetics are an option, but considerably more expensive, but I prefer to do more frequent oil changes in preference myself.

You can also take a look at the Castrol website, which will give you more technical information if required.
Hope that will be of some help ?

Best wishes
SW

A question about oil "type"...
I've always used moto-specific oil to protect my clutch, but since swing has no wet clutch can I use modern energy conserving ratings? The manual says no, but is that because Honda just cuts and pasts manual text for all models, or is there something I haven't considered?

Lately I've been using Rotella, it's MA rated.

oil is use what you want to waste you money on---in US WalMart house brand 10-40 has worked for at least 500,000 miles for me, including wet clutch both Honda and Kawasaki and Suzuki, too. I think Honda now specs 10-30 for Silverwing.

Ever heard of SilverWing engine blowup?? Often oil changes are important to me

Agreed with the Wally World oil, been using the stuff made for older cars... SG/SF I think? I know Honda wants you to use $8 a qt Honda Oil... Fat Chance! Without a wet clutch I should be able to use anything, correct?

SO is it 10w 40 or 10w 30? I just bought 10w 40 and will need to return for exchange. My last oil change was 10w 40

Owner's manual calls for 10W-30, unless average temperature is above 65-70ºF. Then 10W-40 is okay. If you used 10W-40 before and are happy with it, I would use the same. For normal riding, I don't think it would make much difference. Just my 2 cents worth and worth at least half that much.

The 10/40 will work just fine. Honda recommends 10/40 oil for temperature ranges from 20 deg F to 100 F. Although Honda oil is OK
it is not necessary and to pricey.   Howard

I'm using RotellaT 15-40 which in my book is a very durable oil. I've used it in trucks, cars, tractors and motorcycles with go success. If not available I go to Castrol 10-40. Forget about Honda oils or bike specific oils ($$$). Since it's so freaking hot here in Tucson the 40 end gives me a little security. Oil change every 3000 miles is the important point not the 8000 miles as recommended.
