My hubby just got his first Swing, and loves it. Now I'm considering one for myself. Haven't decided to spring for a new one or low mileage used one. Seems like there are alot 2004's & 2007's & 2009's
Are there some years I should not consider?
I'm a petite newly retired gal wanting something that FEELS, more secure & allows me to go further than short trips. I get blown around on my PCX by wind & traffic, and don't like that.

2007 and beyond had a change to a padded dash and better glove box lids.
2009 and beyond I believe added an oxygen sensor to the exhaust.
Other than these items there haven't been any major changes except color.

Other than the above one year is no better or worse than the other.
In terms of used, its really all about the maintenance and condition.

Speaking of maintenance & condition, my only reservation in buying a used Swing, We have no idea how to tell if a bike has been well taken care of, besides the obvious. I saw a very clean 2004 with 2300 miles, but worried that the speedo, could have been changed. If that possible. I will spring for the new if I don't feel comfortable in selecting a used.

Speedo tampering isn't likely. Too much trouble on a bike.
The difference in price on a used bike due to mileage might be 1-2k
Fine for speedo tampering starts at 10k
Simplest thing to do is to have a mechanic go over it.

If you decide to go with a new one, there are usually some hold overs from previous years (2011-2012) new ones that you can get a smoking deal on with a warranty.

For a used one I would look for one with ABS. But that is my preference. Good luck with your hunt!

Good info! Didn't realize the ABS was really a big deal. You're right about the deals on 2012, that is what Hubby got.. Just wish there was another color besides Blk. Guess I'll see if I can pickup one of those smokin good deals, there doesn't seem to be alot around.
Hubby actually let me ride his today, wow the Swing has alot of power, is very smooth, it was a little heavy and felt hard to manage at slow speed. Guess that's just something to get used to, since my scoot is a PCX150. A huge difference.

All relevant. Want to try out my Goldwing? Then you will realize how the SW DOES handle pretty well at slow speeds  :lol!:

Welcome from Seattle.

Moving up in engine size from a 150 is noticeable at any increments.   There are quite a few 400cc maxi scooters to consider as well.  They are lighter than the SW and will do the same job.

Silverwing's are great bikes to buy used as there is not a huge secondary market for this type of bike.  Sellers take what they can get.

Make sure the side stand safety switch has not been tampered / bypassed.  In truth, the less modified, the better.

@ Mudmam, the PCX150 seems to run best about 45, it works great for short trips on city streets. Here in Texas we have alot of freeways where traffic travels at high speeds, the PCX150 in my opinion isn't designed to push hwy speeds. Mine is a 2013 with 750 miles, it is really sharp looking in a metallic red. The PCX150 can do 60 for sure, but I get alot of whippin around by larger vehicles, so I tend to just stay on city streets. Hence, now that I have gotten my traing on a small scooter, I would like to travel further.

Thank You Seattle, I had looked at a Burg in 400, maybe I'm spolied or something, but I thought the Burg didn't quite have the same quality. Have you owned a Berg. Or Magesty? Too bad Honda doesn't sell the 400 in the US.

@GHM-PM
Now those Goldwings Are really huge. The only way I'll ever be on one of those is a passenger....way to much bike for me. My Goodness, when I graduated from HS, you could buy a nice home for 17k, here in TX. My cheap alter ego,, would have a fit if I spent 25 to 40k for a girl toy.

Or a Victory Cross Country. Though, those DO handle pretty well at low speeds for the weight.

Welcome to the forum. My girlfriend has a 06 Burgie 400 and she loves it, has a super low seat height (only one she could flatfoot, she couldn't even touch trying to ride my Swing), a ton of storage, and plenty of power to keep up on our 6 hour rides. Never had any issues at all with it. It is her second one (happened to come across one that only had 250 miles on it but was 3 years newer than what she had).

I owned a Burg 400 but didn't like that one has to have the valves adjusted every 4,000 miles. That is twice a year for me.  Mad

I have had 3 Honda Helix 250cc and although no longer made since 2007, a low mileage Helix would do the freeway miles. Fun and comfortable too with 70 mpg.

Never tried the 650 cc Berg as I like the SW with the Honda reliability and parts availability. 650 Berg has a small history of tranny problems as well.

My brother tried a Yamaha 400 for awhile but he went back to the Helix.

The 400 cc Silverwing would be nice to try out.

Nothing wrong with a low mileage Yamaha Majesty. 400 cc, good fuel economy, dependable, and very capable of freeway speeds. It will surely give Mr Hubby's SW a run for the money.

2013 with 750 miles----go out and ride a quick 5-10,000 miles to get some experience and then take
ERC on husband's SilverWing.

SilverWing is heavy/abrupt clutch take up, gets worse as miles pile up----experience/practice can keep you out of the weeds.

ABS fine feature----may keep you upright in the wet.

Scooters by their nature do not handle as well as motorcycles----require rider attention

Used....unless you do all work yourself can be money pit. Hard to find real cheap and if you cannot judge condition of ones you look at, you probably won't have much luck fixing at home.

Other Maxiscooters in US Market TMAX=handles well maybe expensive to fix as miles pile up---I had a new one. Suzuki Burgman 400==handles bad....had 2 new ones----Suzuki paid big warranty claims, one engine out three times/oil leak......last one at 20,000 miles---complete front and rear clutch/pulley replacement/belt replacement.Burgman 400 in my hands gets/got 10 mpg more than my SilverWings.....Burgman had outlet/mpg computer/outside temp gauge/reading. They are more tire sensitive than SilverWing, about same belt life @20,000 miles.

Get riding experience/miles before you jump into something that is wrong for you

Of the Maxi scooters the possibility of good wind/air/buffeting management is best the silverwing with GIVI adj. windshield-----GIVI box and rack do not seem to screw up handling of SilverWing----am on second new SilverWing (newest leftover 2013) so have the down the road experience.Ride everyday and anything I buy gets hauled home on scooter.

Silver Wing Grur,

OOPS!!!! Well, so much for advice. I went out early this morning and purchased a 2004 SW
in a Black/Rasberry color, had a nice Givi 52 on the back. Not a scratch and had only 2200 miles.
I suspect this will be my next training bike. I was very careful on the PCX150, but hated when the big trucks whizzed by, also a side wind didn't make me feel secure. So, I really appreciate your advice, and hopefully I will keep this one in perfect condition.

Good choice. Good luck with your new scooter. 2200 miles is just broke in. Be sure to check the age of those tires. 8 years is a stretch. There is a DOT code on the side of the tire that will tell you the month and year they were made.

My 05 is the same color.

Thank You! Good to know about the tires. I hadn't given it a lot of thought since it was just inspected. I will use this advice to check on the tires, last thing I want is a flat or worst. Smile
I am getting a lot more confident with each ride. I seem to be having a little difficulty knowing the best way to park in a parking lot when the spaces are at an incline. I am petite and that scooter is heavy. got any advice on searching on a parking spot or the best one to take if the rider is new and unsure? bounce

I almost always back in, but always do when the parking space is downhill. It is easy to roll the bike backwards when it is down hill. If the parking spot is uphill, I will park facing forward and allow the bike to back up going down hill.

Make the gravity work for you.

I'm as concerned with the bike rolling while parked. I have a problem pushing dead weight. the bike weighs approx. 4.5 x my weight so I need a little more muscle to push it backwards.]

If what you meant to say was you're not concerned with the bike rolling while parked you should be if you have to park on a hill.
As for the weight, I have a problem pushing dead weight also. I try to find a spot I can pull through so I don't need to push at all. I have bad hips so I try to push my scooter as little as possible.
