Due to a forum member complaining about me asking folk to introduce themselves I am with-drawing any workshop manual assistance forthwith.

Seriously? Just because I asked you to cut a guy some slack?

The current trend seems to be join this forum not because you're a maxi scooter or Silver Wing enthusiast who wants to be part of a worldwide community of owners and riders with a shared interest.

It's more to do with the random purchase of a scooter you don't know much about and problems you know even less about and need a quick fix for. So you go online to search for info about the problem under Silver Wing . Forums names come up so you have a browse and think this place might help. Simply think of a forum name, register, and steam in right away with your problem.

If it's solved by help from the forum why bother with an update or a word of thanks, there's no need you're sorted. If it's suggested that an Introductory post giving details about yourself and your scooter would be appreciated, you think bollocks to that I'll clear off and look elsewhere.

The trouble with 'cutting some slack' is that it seems to apply only to the non-conformists.

Through making such concessions as in this case the feelings of those who wish to maintain standards are counted for naught.

Dammit - why should I lower my standards for the sake of someone who has few or none?
No wonder the world's in the state it is.

Actually I thought we might cut this guy some slack because he just bought his scooter and couldn't ride it because he was having trouble. It's difficult to be an enthusiast when you can't even get your scooter started. I've been in desperate situations before and the last thing I am looking for is a lecture on how you want me to behave.

My feeling is that when you make a person feel like they've done something wrong or rude after their very first post you're making them LESS likely to stay, not more likely.

I personally don't mind helping people with information when I can. In fact I enjoy it when I can, I wish it were more often. I'd rather people stay and participate because they actually want to, not out of some obligation or the hopes that they will get some help or information.

I hate that I made someone feel bad about anything they said or did on the forum when all I wanted was for people to be a bit nicer when possible, but I'm still not cool with the "I'm taking my ball and going home" response either. I consider it very childish.

I'm sorry I got sarcastic with my response, which is also very childish, but that's how people will react when you talk down to them in the manner of "know all the facts (that you can't possibly know because I didn't tell anybody) before you speak."

Most people on this forum are willing to help others but as has been said before people do get cheesed off by the first post being a request (plea) for help. It doesn't take much time to type in an introductory post beforehand and then typing another asking the questions you need answers for. When you see number of posts = 1 I think to myself it will be unlikely that this person is going to remain on the forum once they get an answer. Look at the posts that introductory posts get and you will see how friendly a forum we are. Hopefully new people to the forum will also pick up on that.

Point taken and accepted in the spirit in which you made your post.

There are exceptions but I still think the norm should be to make a proper introductory post.
