I am 5'8" weigh 180 and was curious if the Honda Swing was a good entry level moped? Reason being I want something that isn't going to have issues keeping up with traffic on the freeways or losing power going uphill.

Awesome thanks Bigbird !!

I hear alot about cc's when looking at entry level mopeds/cycles and the 600cc Swing had me wondering if I am a new rider if this might be biting off too much for a beginner?

On the flip side of the coin in California there's a lot of freeway driving and I don't want to have to tax my Moped just to attempt to keep up with traffic.

Don't worry, you will enjoy it. It is rather heavy & quite powerful so you could get yourself into trouble.

I would reccomend taking a MSF trainiung course before even considering buying anything. You have to know yourself first.

Hi yo you are absolutely correct. I came here essentially as part of my fact finding but the MSF state certified training classes is the first layer of work for my endeavor into the two wheeling world of fun.

I wanted to come here to throw it out to the experts you guys who have experience with this specific scooter family and pick your brains if you will so I can ensure I am making a good choice that will allow me to have fun safely.

A scooter too underpowered will serve me no purpose I do too much highway driving living in SoCal and a scooter that is too much to handle will also have adverse effects so that's why it's essential for me to talk to the people who know what they are talking about and that's where you all come in Smile

First get a MC lic. SilverWing not the best for entry level rider. Power not a problem, more than enough to put you in the weeds if you don't know what you are doing.

It is perfectly able to keep up with even the fast w coast traffic. Most American riders would probably wet their pants at German speeds, even on big scooter----and on their big displacement cruisers cannot ride well out of a wet/muddy/grass field.

For me, my SilverWing did well at high cruising speeds....just used a lot of gas in that mode......and oh, the horrible stock windshield.

Make sure you get ABS model----can save inexperienced in the wet.

For a real beginner, I'd personally recommend something in the 150cc to 250cc size. Something used. Something you don't mind picking up off the ground after you've accidentally dropped it, and don't mind some scratches if you run off the road and into a fence or ditch. Of course, if you're real careful you may be fine learning on a 600cc power scooter, but if you want to do that get some good practice in the MSF basic course first.

Hi "swingnewbie"
Don't want to bore anyone with my sordid life, but did want you to know that I, too, was a "newbie" (a brand new 64 year old newbie) when I decided to purchase the SWing as a 'starter' bike... (yeah, might as well call it that; except for a little different shape, it has all the amenities of the big boys). Plus I'm 'bout your body stature too. I purchased mine back in June of '08. Lucked out and got a good price on an'05 with the ABS that John mentioned.

Anyway, I had already been on Silver Wing net sites for a couple of years, reading, learning, and trying to make up my mind. Once I did, I took the cycle safety course (which was great with its little 250cc bikes to practice on) and immediately got my license, then started a prolonged net search for a SWing. Once acquired, I had the advantage of using minimally traveled rural county roads on which to get my initial break in mileage (and a modicum of confidence) built up.

To further force myself to do even more and better, I joined an American Legion Riders unit and the Patriot Guard Riders. Riding with groups made me concentrate on what they were doing (from already obtained experience) and I learned much from them plus gained valuable experience for myself. Long story, longer, I did okay; am comfortable on the bike and really enjoy the ride. Have had my share of miscues but recoveries were luckily, more from embarrassement than anything else.

Good luck and welcome to the finest SWing site around. A wealth of information like you won't believe.

Hello swingnewbie:
Welcome to the Silverwing site. you will find that the Swing really isn't designed to be a starter bike. Sure for some of us it was our first bike, but a lot of the guys on here moved up to the Swing after learning on something smaller and a bunch more moved to the SWing from full on motorcycles when their tired bones made it difficult to throw a leg over the seat any more. The Swing may not be as quick as some of the crotch rockets you see around, but it will blow away many of the cruiser type bikes, so it is plenty powerful to "put you in the weeds" as John stated, (or in jail if they catch you at triple digits).

Definitely take the MSF class. This could save your life. You will probably know after riding the 250's if you are ready to tackle the Swing. It can be a beast at first, but once you master it, you will love it. Hope to see you around.

I was 227 lbs when I got my Swing but I 14 lbs to 213 to improve performance on my Swing... ok, just kidding.

I think the Swing would be a great choice for you. Go to a dealer and sit on one for 30 minutes, move your feet into the front position vs. the tucked under you position, etc. I think you will find the body fit for your height is just right. Oh, wear your riding boots... at my height I find that the fit is fine barefoot, but when I put on my steel toed Engineer style Red Wings I really miss the 2 inches the boot soles take up. At 5'8 it should feel really good to you.

The bike accelerates nicely even with my bulk. 5'9.5 and now 213 lbs.... Someplace I read the specs said 0-60 in 11.x seconds...

I would not go with a less powerful engine / bike for highway riding. A guy I met got a 250cc motorcycle and traded to a HD Sportster because while he could get to highway speed he got blown around. It also takes longer to reach top speed and you are pushing the engine to it's limit. You want some reserve. If you want to ride highways I would not go with anything lighter or smaller - unless it is a 500cc crotch rocket... but you don't want that as a beginner.

I've had my Swing at 85+ mph indicated and the RPM was around 6000-6500 - red line is around 8000 but you don't want to get to it. At that speed the bike is OK but I also don't feel super stable. Part of it is I have a tall Givi windshield and I think a Givi AirFlow would be much better. The big windshield creates air resistance and the air actually buffets me from behind. A couple vetter vents increase the envelope a little but I still need to lean forward to be in dead air. I will be trying the stock windshield (Just found it!!!!) and maybe even a Givi AirFlow later this summer. Anyway, the bike as is with the tall Givi is great until about 60 - 65 mph after which I have to crouch forward, which is not fun after a few minutes - I want to be upright.

The bike is 500 lbs but that is slung low. Still, it can catch you by surprise and tip at a stop if you are leaning when you come to a halt. In motion it feels much lighter and I caught myself leaning way over when turning in a parking lot - just fun to toss it around. Just do it with respect.

BTW, the Speedo lies by about 5 mph on most bikes.

I bought my Swing ('06 with ABS) to learn to ride. I figured not having to shift would take away a big distraction and I could focus on speed and lean and balance. I'm glad I made that choice.

If you are looking at no-shift bikes that can go on the highway your main choices are the Burgman, Silverwing, Piaggio and T-Max. Honda will have a NC700x adventure bike out this summer and I plan to look at that carefully. I think the Burgman is the most touring oriented but a bit heavier than the Silverwing. I like it a lot, particularly for my body size, but also think it is much less nimble than the Silverwing and they are pricier, especially with ABS. The others don't fit my body.

My Swing was a good compromise: price for a good used one was right, it had ABS, it worked on the highway, it worked on local roads, it thoroughly confirmed my expectation that I will like riding and has me hooked on riding 2 wheels and becoming a "biker". Smile

I found the Swing a lot easier to ride than the safety course's Suzuki 250. Even though it weighs more the center of mass is low and the controls are fewer and easier to work. I can feel the bike grip when I rev the engine and don't have to mess with the clutch. And it feels much more maneuverable. The course bikes are "macho" while the Swing is refined.

I think one of the beauties of the Swing is that it covers such a big range of capabilities and useful fit. Not perfect in any single role but close to the top. It is not just a retirement bike but a great bike for learning on, commuting and just fun.

Yes, I plan to get a Goldwing for touring and an Adventure bike for semi off road stuff... but I wold skip thinking of the latter if the Swing had big wheels and 6+ inches of ground clearance... Smile

Hmmm. You like the Swing because it has fewer controls, no clutch to "mess with", is easier to ride than a Suzuki 250, yet you want to get a Goldwing and a 650 Adventure bike.
Strange.

The poster is talking about his experience as a first time rider. He has his experience and his own reasons for wanting a Goldwing.

swingnewbie, the S/Wing is the perfect scooter for you, I too was in the same situation you're in two years ago, We are close in size, I'm 5"81/2', 175lb. I turn 69 tommorow, the S/Wing is the perfect scoot for me, no shifting, plenty of power, easy to handle, comfortable, plenty of storage with top box, just be careful trying to reach triple digits, I reached 100 mph on the freeway only one time, with all that tupperware and small tires, I hit a strong cross wind and she started to wobble really bad, I don't go over 85 now. Take the M/C safety course and enjoy your new S/Wing. Ride Safe.

Welcome to the forum from the rainy city on the left coast.

Buy it, ride it with some respectful caution. Enjoy it. The first time a dog puts his head out the window, he is hooked. You will be too.

As others, I recommend a new rider training course. In Washington State, if you take the MSC, and you pass, you only have to go to the DMV to pay your license fee and get your picture taken as you have demonstrated the necessary skills to qualify for a mc endorsement. This class is subsidized by the state and costs $125.

In Washington State, you can get a learners permit after passing the written portion of the examination. You would then have 6 months to take the riding test.

I am sure your state is different, but probably has similar laws and classes.

(or at least were humorous)... at least in the poster's opinion. yaknowwhatImean???? well... do ya'??? Do ya', huh??? It's Sunday night and I just have to much time on my hands. Larryinseattle is right - it's my view point based on my experiences. I still like the twist and go clutchless life.

As far as the Adventure bike, I am waiting for the Honda NC700x to come out - I think that will have an automatic option. I will be comparing it to the V-Strom 650. Of course looking at new on a used budget could be an issue... hence the V-Strom consideration.

The Goldwing is for highway driving - get up to 5th and leave it in that gear for an hour or two or more. ( I bet you the next GL model will have an automatic option - I just won't be able to afford it.)

Also, I have ridden toe tappers in demo rides and can handle it, just don't see the point of playing with a clutch and gears. At least on a car it gives your left leg real exercise, going up and down, but on a bike you are just moving your toes. I do like having the option for manual gear selection sans clutch for the rare times when you really want to override the automatic.

Oh, all looking for a second ride is on hold - HVAC needs replacing and a woodchuck ate my truck's electric wiring...

This can be a serious problem. In an effort to be "green" the car manufactures have started using a soy-based plastic as insulation on the wiring in newer cars. Many rodents like the taste of the new insulation and quite a few people who have parked their cars in the outlying parking lots at Denver International Airport have returned to find that their cars no longer run because the wiring was chewed to pieces.

A couple of years ago I had a squirrel sneak into my garage and chew up
a leather bike seat and the tires on my lawn tractor.

You have to watch out for those rascally rodents
