I thought dealers (stealers) are the enemy? Not from my perspective, some shops are not good, but that can happen in any service industry.

Happy to hear your dealer is taking care of you.

It's good to hear you have a good dealer. I have a 2004 silverwing with 42,000 miles on it, and just
two weeks ago i found the same problem yours has. I normally do all the work myself
on my bike. I took it as far apart as i could, but found out i needed a special tool to
get the rear clutch off. So i took it down to the dealer and they took it apart too, and
got as far as they could. They found out they need the same part too but didn't have
it in stock. They ordered the tool, so far its been almost two weeks and still now word
from them. I'll let you know when they fix it.

Besides the RTV sealer that seals the 2 halves of the drive housing, there are two shaft seals. One on the input shaft (on the clutch side of the housing) and the final drive output shaft (on the wheel side).

Here is an illustration of where the seals are located.

FWIW, you don't need the Special Tool to to reinstall the Clutch Bell (Clutch Outer). You do, however, need the Special clutch outer remover Tool (07ZMC-MCTA100) to get the Clutch Bell off.

You can use the original 22 mm (?) nut that holds on the Driven Pulley/Clutch assy, along with some PVC tubing and a couple of large washers to 'press' the Clutch Bell back onto the splined shaft. The Bell is really not on the shaft all that tight. It goes on easy enough, so I don't know why there is such a heavy and large tool required to remove it.

Here is a link from the Italian Silverwing site with a 'blueprint' for the Removal tool. If you've got access to a machinist go for it:

http://66.163.168.225/babelfish/translate_url_content?.intl=us&lp=it_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.silverwing400.it%2findex.php%3foption%3dcom_content%26task%3dview%26id%3d86%26Itemid%3d44

Yeah, I know it's a mangled translation from Italian, but if there's a better idea to get the Clutch Bell off please let us know. HTH

Tim

Looks like a tool I made for pulling a shaft on a CNC machine when I had too work for a living, A pipe with some ears welded into it, a chunk of square stock drilled and taped welded onto the end. We had to make quite a few of our own pullers due to having downtime or waiting on having them shipped. Some of the company's wanted you to use their men to do the repairs and wouldn't sell the tools needed so you had no choice but to make your own.

bigbird,

It seems you are dealing with a very good shop even though it is taking awhile to get the puller. I couldn't see a shop in my area giving me a loaner bike, or an offer to trade a bike, that they need to repair, for a new SWing. Regardless of what happens I would stay with this shop. But I hope you get what you want really soon since I'm sure you can't wait to get it back.

Are they being so good to you because of certain laws up there in Canada? Maybe I've been out here in California too long, because I just can't see the shops here doing all of this. Maybe the BMW shops would but I can't see the shops that sell the bikes from Japan being so good to people. Good luck and keep us informed.

Hey bigbird, stay off that GL1800 or you may be bitten by the bug. There just isn't any other touring bike that can come close. Too bad about the price tag.
