Where is the driven face retaining nut in the parts catalogue?

My catalogue shows the drive shaft but not the retaining nut? Can't find it anywhere.

Any ideas?

Thank you Cosmic Jumper. The reason I had discounted that one is because that nut on my SW is 22mm. Also, that same nut shows as Item#16 on my catalogue and shows at 16mm.

I'm confused. However, I do believe that my mystery is solved. That has to be it.....

It's a 16mm thread, 22mm wrench size.

All the nut/bolt info in the parts list show the thread size, not the wrench size. HTH

That helps a lot Tim. I might finally get my head around this stuff.

You have a head start on us, metric sizes are normal to you! Smile

Well, you might think so.

We measure fuel consumption in 'miles per gallon' and buy petrol in 'litres'.

We measure socket drives in 1/8, 3/8 and 1/2 'inch' drives but measure socket sizes in 'mm'.

We buy beer in cans in 'ml' but get served 'pints' in pubs.

Is it any wonder we are a screwed up nation?

Did you finally get rid of Wentworth sizes? Seems I remember those sized bolts on my '57 MGA.

I don't know whether they've gone.....Harley in the UK still use imperial sizes, (so I gather from my mate who rides a Sportster).

The 57 MGA being a car, I couldn't possibly comment!

I believe that Wentworth sized tools were fairly common in Britain at one time, I know my MG and a friend's Triumph TR3 had Wentworth which were close enough to use US SAE fractional inch standard tools. For anyone wants to know about the subject see the link.

It's an interesting point. Maybe we should google it?. I remember hearing about Wentworth sizes in the 70's and 80's but I've never had to use them. I imagine that vintage car enthusiasts still use them.

Should we setup a specialist subject within the forum to deal with this stuff? I've just bought a 'vernier caliper' and a 'thread gauge'.

I love nuts and bolts...

Wentworth! That was a fictional prison in an Aussie TV soap. It's Whitworth or BSW, British Standard Whitworth.

What Meldrew (hi bud) said, let's remember that the B.S.W thread form was also used in;

B.S.F ........ British Standard Fine

&

B.A ........ British Association

........ diameters & pitches, with spanners marked accordingly.

Then there's the S.A.E .... Society of Automotive Engineers system, which uses the Across Flats dimension of the bolt/nut for spanner sizes for use on ;

U.N.C ....... Unified National Coarse

&

U.N.F ....... Unified National Fine

..... thread forms, the larger sizes of each form are fractional & smaller are numbered

With the Metric thread system,  any size hex' head can be applied to any bolt size, also to 'muddy the waters' a bit more, there are two thread standards, Metric Coarse & metric Fine, then there are the 'Non Preferred' pitches.

Gotta lurve a bit of engineering

Joseph Whitworth did for standardising in the UK engineering industy, what Henry Ford did in the USA

Mea Culpa! My memory about my MGA's tool set has somewhat faded, it being more than half a century  since I last used those tools. Whitworth it was of course.

A couple other things I remember from that quintessentially British motorcar equipped with such 'interesting' devices as Lucas Electric aka 'Prince of Darkness' electrical devices. Lucas was so well though of that Morris Garage (the builder of the MG) provided a crank to start the engine on the occasions when  Mr. Lucas' products such as the Lucas electric starter failed.  Not to forget those wonderful SU sidedraft carburetors which were guaranteed to be out of sync within two hours of having been adjusted. Ah yes... some days I was able to actually operate the car without working on it prior to departing in it.

Skinner-Union, awful things they were, converting to Stromberg's was the preferred option IIRC.
