PostSubject: Dusty RearWheel   Dusty RearWheel I_icon_minitimeSun Jul 15, 2018 1:34 pm

I've noticed recently that my rear wheel is collecting black dust after every few hundred miles. When I clean it with a white cloth it looks like black brake dust. I fitted new rear pads (genuine Honda ones) about 1000 miles ago. I thought they would have stopped producing dust and bedded in by now. I clean the discs regularly as a matter of weekly maintenance. It doesn't appear to be oily so I doubt it's a leak from the final drive.

Any ideas?

It probably is brake dust, I just spray the wheels with Muc- Off cleaner and leave it on for a few minutes before I wash the scooter. Then the dust rinses off when I hose it down pre and post wash. Occasionally I'll have quick poke around with a wheel brush in the spokes, and with the Silver Wing having those smooth 3 spoke wheels, it's a quick and easy job.

My previous maxi was a Burgman 650 with rough cast alloy wheels that attracted a lot more brake dust and they were an absolute pig to clean. The over complicated transmission made the rear wheel difficult to turn by hand for spraying and cleaning. I also had to wear gloves to turn the heavy front wheel to prevent accidental cuts to the hand from the sharp edges of the ABS sensor ring.

So after all the palaver with the lardass Burgman, the Silver Wing's wheel are a doodle.

They will produce dust right up until you replace them, and the next set ect. ect. Br glad the rims are EZ to clean. At least twice a year after a deep cleaning mine I wax the rims, for a while at least they seem to be able to be cleaned with a decent hosing off.

Thanks Meldrew and Oldwingguy,

It's reassuring to know this stuff. I just wasn't aware that it was happening so often. Funny thing is, I don't use the brakes very often, they only slow you down Razz

I keep my brake disks clean. Never use the brakes. Never have to replace pads. (On my 8th pair of boots this month.)

An Alisim being a word combo , such as humistickity, the feeling that one should have stayed inside when it was 100 deg. F and 90% humidity.
