PostSubject: Plastic handlebar covers   Plastic handlebar covers I_icon_minitimeMon Mar 26, 2018 11:45 am

I recently decided to make a minor adjustment to my handlebar angle. To do this I had to remove the plastic handlebar covers. After pondering these covers I have decided that they are cosmetic items that serve no other practical purpose. I made my handlebar adjustment easily but also noticed all of the previously hidden mounting points. There are 6 mounting points (4 handlebar mount bolts and 2 8mm bolt mount points where the plastic covers mounted). On top of this you have the exposed handlebars to mount handlebar mounted devices. After cleaning all the dust and dirt the "look" has grown on me to the point that I have decided to leave the covers off and take advantage of some of the exposed mounting points. This will probably not appeal to some but it is a usable option for an otherwise wasted space and a small loss of cosmetic beauty. I hope you don't consider this a "Dumbest stunt" because it works well for me.

Just asking Carolina. How about a photo so we can see what it looks like and if any of us want to do the same thing. Thanks in advance.

Good thought. There's a lot of good handlebar mounting space under those covers.

The 2004-2006 Honda Reflex Sport had a nice cover which mounted to the handle bar / steering stem mount and covered that gaping hole left when the handle bar covers were removed. It would be nice if that Reflex piece could be adapted to a Silverwing. Link:

IIRC some JDM FJS600 Silverwings had a cover similar to that NSS250S piece. Unobtainium AFAIK.

Wonder if a PCX 150 cover plate would adapt easily, if anyone fancies trying it, there's a cheap one here >>>

Thanks gentlemen. Those are both great suggestions. I have pretty much gotten used to the gap mentioned because after mounting a gps , a 12volt plug in adapter, and a cup holder in that space it has all but disappeared. That being said, I have been told that I am a fat, bald, toothless, and tasteless a__hole recently so my idea of "Good Taste" may differ significantly from others. Once you add an accessory or two in the area it really looks okay. The beauty of the whole thing is that if you are disappointed or horrified at the appearance you can simply reinstall the plastic covers and send me a nasty post. I'll understand.

I am technologically challenged for now. I still use a landline telephone (lol). I'm working on it because I would love to post pictures like the rest of you folks. Thank you for your patience.

L O L .........good one bikehiker. I wondered if anyone would notice that comment. Actually I do have a small flip phone to carry with me on trips and it is way too small for things like texting. I need to jump on into the 21st century and acquire a smart phone in the near future. I am constantly being ridiculed by friends for the phone thing and for paying my bills by written check.......oh well. Some of us (or maybe just me) seem to be stuck doing things the "old school" way.

Nice to see that there's another guy here who falls into the "an old guy with a paper map and a flip phone" demographic.

Yes sir. I sadly admit that I am woefully behind the times but I will try to improve if I can muster up enough brain cells to pull it off.

+1 for me too - and I'm only 31!

I just don't like the user experience of 'smart phones'. If I wanted to use all the features of a laptop, I'll use a laptop thanks. And a paper map doesn't lose signal, get flat batteries, or speak with an annoying voice! Wink

I've recently got a 'smart phone' purely to get the AA 'app' on it, I ride in a general direction, which can see me riding in strange areas where I'm uncertain of the road number let alone the place name, if I ever do breakdown all I'd have to do is click on .. Help me .. GPS gives my location & links me to the tracker on the recovery vehicle, also gives an ongoing estimated arrival time. Like all other forms of insurance I hope to never need it, but it's nice to know it's there if things go 'pear shaped'
